Worm Tea

When we hear the word “Tea” we most likely think of a hot cup of tea that we have brewed in a kettle. In the case of Worm Tea, it is made by brewing the worm castings in cold water (not hot) over a period of time. It is not “tea” for humans, this is “tea” for your plants. Worm Tea is another beneficial way to extract the microbes from the worm castings to place on or around your plants.

What is Worm Tea?

Worm tea is a liquid concentrate. An all natural product made by soaking worm castings in water to extract the beneficial nutrients within it.

Why use Worm Tea?

It gives plants an instant boost as it makes the nutrients available for the plants immediately. Inexpensive to make. A little goes a long way!

Ways to make worm tea?

Aeration method – provides a bigger boost to the plants and lawn

  • Use a bucket, un-chlorinated water (well water or rainwater), sugar source (unsulphured molasses) and an air bubbler. Brew for 24-48 hours.

Note: Worm tea is a fresh product you make at home. Use within 12 hours after aeration has stopped.

Shake and Spray method – provides a boost to the plants.

  • Same steps as Aeration method but without the air bubbler.

Dilute it in a spray bottle, watering can or sprayer.

How to use worm tea?

Use it diluted or undiluted with water and spray directly onto plants or your lawn to use as a root drench.

Dilution rate of 1 part tea : 2 – 5 parts water

For small lawns, you can use the aerated tea in a spray bottle or hand sprayer. Larger lawns can be sprayed using a tow-behind garden sprayer to spray directly on to your lawn. Use at full strength or diluted at 1 part tea to 2-5 parts water. Use up to 2 times per week.
